English/Language Arts
The first module in NY Engaged uses informational text and literature to introduce readers to the power of literacy. It encourages students to develop a love of reading. Students learn about close reading, and identifying the main idea or "gist" of stories they read. Students practice reading in self selected "power books" to become reading superheroes. This module is connected to the Common Core and builds reading fluency, as well as develops vocabulary and many other reading skills. The class will relate reading to experiences of children around the world and the power of education and reading.
